Ice Fishing Crappie
AKA: Hooking Papermouth
Ice fishing for crappies is the most popular form of ice fishing.
They are easy to catch and provide a nice sporting fight.
Finding them is another story. Crappie tend to school together and wander all over the lakes they inhabit.
Suspended crappies are the likely target in many cases,
but fishing on the bottom will yield better catches. The
reason is that you may stumble across some walleye while
fishing for crappie.
Tackle needed to ice fish crappies include:
- Small split shot
- small shiner or fathead minnow
- small bobber
- Small hook
- Light action ice fishing rod
Hook your bait just behind the dorsal fin....and hang on!
One of the more popular lakes for ice fishing crappies is the
Upper Red Lake in Minnesota.
